Maleic Hydrazide

Plant Growth Regulators

Its alkali metal salts are soluble in water and stable toward acidic and alkaline aqueous solutions.

CAS No.
123-33-1

Common name: Maleic Hydrazide

Molecular formula: C4H4N2O2

Common name in English: maleic hydrazide

CAS No.: 123-33-1

Physical and chemical properties:
White crystals, melting point 296–298℃. Sparingly soluble in water (solubility about 0.6% at 25℃), readily soluble in diethanolamine or triethanolamine, soluble in dimethylformamide and slightly soluble in ethanol. Its alkali metal salts are soluble in water and stable toward acidic and alkaline aqueous solutions. Acute oral LD50 in rats is 6950 mg/kg; non-irritating.

Properties and characteristics:
A selective herbicide and temporary plant growth inhibitor. The agent can enter the plant through the leaf cuticle, reducing photosynthesis, osmotic pressure and transpiration, and strongly inhibiting bud growth. It is used to prevent sprouting of potato tubers, onions, garlic, radishes and the like during storage, and has the effect of inhibiting crop growth and prolonging flowering. It can also be used as a herbicide or for chemical topping of tobacco. It is generally prepared as the diethanolamine salt and used as a readily water-soluble solution. Formulations include an aqueous solution of the diethanolamine salt, and the potassium salt aqueous solution can also be used. A plant growth regulator. It is produced by the reaction of maleic anhydride with hydrazine sulfate in aqueous solution. Used to inhibit the growth of grasses, hedges and trees, to inhibit sprouting of potatoes and onions, and to prevent root growth in tobacco, at a dosage of 2–5 kg/ha.
